Description
The ledger of James Patterson documents the taxes he collected in Pittsburgh and surrounding communities from 1815 to 1818. Patterson maintained quarterly statements for taxes collected on: carriages and harnesses, licenses to retailers, sales at auction, stamp paper, distilled spirits, and manufactured goods. Perhaps most importantly, Patterson documents the taxes he collected for distilling equipment licenses; the ledger indicates a growth in the number of individuals distilling liquor over time. The ledger also records Patterson's deposits to the Pittsburgh branch of the Bank of Pennsylvania.
