The ledger of James Patterson documents the taxes he collected in the seventeenth collecting district of Pennsylvania from 1815 to 1818. Patterson's collecting district included Pittsburgh and surrounding communities. The ledger records the name of the person paying tax and how much tax they were charged for various items. Patterson maintained quarterly statements for taxes collected on: carriages and harnesses, licenses to retailers, sales at auction, stamp paper, distilled spirits, and the manufacture of iron, nails, hats, umbrellas, paper, boots, beer, tobacco products, leather and precious metals. Perhaps most importantly, Patterson documents the taxes he collected for distilling equipment licenses; the ledger indicates a growth in the number of individuals distilling liquor over time. The ledger also records Patterson's deposits to the Pittsburgh branch of the Bank of Pennsylvania.
