Information on grievances from the 1940s to 1960s provide some perspective into the daily lives of workers at the GE plant during the Red Scare period., Records of United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America Local 506, Erie, Pa., 1940-1980s, UE 16-506, Archives Service Center, University of Pittsburgh., Gift of the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America Local 506, 1990s., United Electrical, Radio, and Machine Workers of America (UE) Local 506 represents workers at the General Electric (GE) plant in Erie, Pennsylvania. The local was founded in 1937 and was the last major GE plant to be organized. Local 506 often found itself at the forefront of UE activities, being one of the first locals to begin picketing during the 1945 strike and having its members, such as local president John Nelson, declared Communists in the early stages of McCarthyism.
