  • Chess records his farm work, land surveying, the names of people he visits or who visit him, payments he receives or makes, and various goods he buys. On September 24, he marries Amanda Sterrett, noting the time as 8:30 pm, and they spend their honeymoon traveling west, stopping at Chicago and Salt Lake City, and then arriving at San Francisco on October 3, from there visiting Yosemite, San Jose, Santa Cruz, and Pescadero. They stop at Reno on their way back home in November. Chess records where they stayed and dined at, as well as people they visited or traveled with.
