Scope and Content Notes
The Merriman Scrapbook Collection consists of 140 volumes of theatre programs, newspaper and magazine clippings, photographs, and other ephemera documenting Pittsburgh and New York performing arts history. For the most part, the materials date from before the 1870s through the early 1940s. About ninety percent of the contents of the collection relate to Pittsburgh theatre history and the remainder relating to New York City Broadway productions. Mr. Merriman had a very specific arrangement for the majority of the collection. Other than the scrapbooks being disbound and foldered, the collection has remained in that order. The materials are mounted in a series of nearly identical scrapbooks. With few exceptions, they measure 15 by 10 inches. The scrapbook's paper is still in good condition. The clippings from the 1930s and 1940s are brittle and have not held up as well as the earlier materials. The collection is arranged into seven series. The bulk of the collection is contained in the first two series: "Lettered" and "Numbered" scrapbooks. A selection of the original covers of the scrapbooks were kept and are stored in the last box of the collection.

Biography
Oliver P. Merriman, 1866-1942, was a theater enthusiast who solicited materials and compiled a comprehensive and well organized collection of over 160 scrapbooks. The vast majority of these scrapbooks documented nearly a century of the performing arts in Pittsburgh. Mr. Merriman enjoyed a long career in the real estate department of Mellon Bank. He and his wife, the former Mary Louise Vogel, lived in the East End of the city and attended many of the productions documented in these scrapbooks. Merriman befriended theatre managers to help him collect programs for the performances that he could not attend and was also able to obtain programs from productions dating back to before the Civil War. "I collected them, but how and when and where I started I do not know. You know how you collect anything. You first throw it into a box. Bye and bye the box gets full and you realize that you are going to have to arrange the contents in some order." (Interview with Marie M'Swigan, Pittsburgh Press, January 12, 1930)
For about 20 years the Merriman scrapbooks were stored at the Allegheny Branch of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, until they were gifted to Dr. Ford E. Curtis in 1964.

Scope and Content Notes
The scrapbooks in this series were assigned numbers by Mr. Merriman. There is no known reason why some subjects were given their own number and why others were given a sub-divided number/letter combination. As with the other scrapbooks in the collection these contain theatre programs, newspaper and magazine clippings, photographs, and other ephemera.

Scope and Content Notes
The vast majority of this scrapbook relates to non-theatre related female personalities of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It includes materials on Clara Barton, Hellen Keller, Nellie Bly, etc. It is believed that the only reason this volume was not retained by the Carnegie Library was that there are a few pages devoted to Rosemary Casey, a Pittsburgh playwright.

Scope and Content Notes
The Dated Scrapbook series is pretty straight forward in its organization. The series contains Pittsburgh theatre programs arranged in chronological order. Note that while all the programs date from the time span listed in the title of the folder, the dates of the newspaper clippings and accompanying items stretch into the 1930s and 1940s.

Scope and Content Notes
This series contains several sets of scrapbooks that are grouped by subject and then were given an abbreviated title. The first two volumes of scrapbooks (SEP and LIB) contain articles clipped from the Saturday Evening Post, Liberty Magazine, and Colliers. It should be noted that Merriman used different paper for "the Ideal Scrapbook," this paper and the contents glued to it are extremely brittle. This scrapbook contains the same types of materials from both Pittsburgh and New York elsewhere in the collection, but is ordered chronologically. One difference is that whole Broadway booklet programs are pasted onto the pages, rather than just the necessary program information clipped out.

The full title of the book is The stage and its stars past and present: a gallery of dramatic illustration and critical biographies of distinguished English and American actors from the time of Shakespeare till to-day, edited by Howard Paul and George Gebbie. Please note that the Curtis Collection has another copy of this work still in its original binding.

Scope and Content Notes
This small grouping of materials never found their place in Merriman's scrapbook scheme. Most of the materials are from the 1940s, so he may have passed away before he could create a proper section for them. These materials are all housed in one folder and are grouped into five subseries - Programs, Photographs and Other Images, Newspaper Clippings, and materials related to Thomas Kirk, a Pittsburgh theatre manager. Finally, there is one box of a representative sample of scrapbook bindings.
Scope and Content Notes
James N McGrath, Jr. was a stage manager for Pittsburgh's Syria Mosque and Alvin Theatre. This photo is autographed.
Scope and Content Notes
Thomas Frances Kirk, Jr. was the manager of Pittsburgh's Nixon Theatre from 1901-1916.
