Description
In 1819 Jacob and Barbara Anna Negley donated land for the purpose of establishing a Presbyterian church in the community of East Liberty. The first East Liberty Presbyterian Church opened in 1828. The original building was replaced in 1847 due to the growing size of the congregation. Twenty years later, due to the continued growth of the congregation, an even larger church was erected. In 1918, William and Richard Mellon, the grandsons of the original donors, presented the church with a track of land directly adjoining the building, allowing the fourth expansion of the church to take place. Finally in 1935, Richard Mellon and his wife, in honor of their mothers, financed the fifth and final expansion of the East Liberty Presbyterian Church. The new gothic styled structure opened on Mother’s Day, May 12, 1935.
