Description
The Courtney Grist Mill (pictured here), located on Beaver Road in Emsworth, Pennsylvania, was built in 1805 by William and David Courtney. It was preceded by an 1802 mill constructed by Emsworth’s first settler, John Cheney. Prior to the construction of the mills, the main form of employment in the area was farming. The Borough of Emsworth was incorporated into Allegheny County in 1896 after a long legal struggle. The borough quickly grew into a vibrant residential community with a trolley service provided by the Pittsburgh Railway Company, and a “modern” lock and dam system constructed by the United States Army Corp of Engineers in 1919.
