Description
Freshmen dance with poppies, Persephone's flower, in Part II of the May Day festival. The May Queen's court, other participants, and Woodland Road are visible in the background. By the mid-1920s, Pennsylvania College for Women held a May Day pageant every other year. The 1929 pageant had an ancient Greek theme and was titled, “Persephone, A Greek Festival.” The first three parts told the story of Persephone, the goddess of spring. Part IV depicted other Greek myths, including the story of Atalanta, Hippomenes, and the golden apples. The play was written by Marjorie Stevenson '29 and once again directed by Vanda Kerst.
