Description
The Laboratory School of Music was started by Mihail Stolarevsky and his wife, Kay, in 1949. Mihail was a member of the Pittsburgh Symphony and also lectured at Chatham from 1948 to 1974. He had a bachelor's' degree from the Technical University in Coethen, Germany and an advanced degree from the Imperial Conservatory in Kiev, Russia. The Laboratory School of Music focused on group instruction and was part of Chatham's contribution to Pittsburgh's Renaissance during the 1950s. In 1956, the Stolarevskys started the Music Day Camp, which took place during the summer and augmented the Laboratory School instruction. According to Kay, the purpose of these programs was to "enrich students' lives with art and music." Mihail died in 1974, but during the fiftieth anniversary of the Music Day Camp in 2006 his wife said that he would be proud of the programs. In his memory she started the Mihail Stolarevsky Scholarship Fund for the Music Day Camp at The Pittsburgh Foundation.
