Description
Pittsburgh architects Ingham & Boyd designed the Buhl Planetarium (foreground under construction) in the stripped Classical style at a cost of $1.07 million. The Planetarium was dedicated on October 24, 1939, and was named in honor of Henry Buhl, Jr. (1869-1927), a City of Allegheny (now Pittsburgh’s North Side neighborhood) merchant who owned a department store that catered to the wealthy. The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh-Allegheny Regional Building is pictured in the background. It was originally known as the Carnegie Free Library, named after its benefactor, Andrew Carnegie, who donated over $250,000 for its construction in 1886 and another $150,000 for an expansion in 1915. Smithmeyer and Pelz, the architects who designed the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., designed this building. The 17-story, Italian Romanesque style Allegheny General Hospital (far left background) was built in 1930 and designed by New York architects York & Sawyer.
