Description
The United States Veterans Hospital No. 103 was located in Aspinwall, Pennsylvania, atop a hill on 147 acres overlooking the Allegheny River. The hospital opened on October 16, 1925, to take care of ex-service men suffering from tuberculosis and shell shock following World War I. The hospital was composed of numerous buildings that varied in size. All the structures at the site were fireproof and constructed of brick, title, and concrete. The complex included a main building, an officer’s quarters, a nurses’ home, an engineering plant, a barbershop, and a library. The Veterans’ Bureau built the complex at a cost of $64 million.
