Description
The H.J. Heinz Company Main Plant (center) on the north shore of the Allegheny River (left center), between the tracks of the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, opposite downtown Pittsburgh (center background). The H.J. Heinz Company was founded in 1869 by Henry John Heinz (1844-1919). By the early twentieth century, the main plant had grown to a group of buildings covering ten city blocks and comprising 50 acres of floor space. The complex included preserving kitchens, bottling and packing departments, a box factory with automatic nailing machines, a can factory, and horse stables.
