Description
The H.J. Heinz Company main plant with Herr’s Dam (foreground) from across the Allegheny River in Pittsburgh’s Strip District neighborhood. H.J. Heinz Company was founded in 1869 by Henry John Heinz (1844-1919). By the early twentieth century, the main plant had grown to a group of buildings covering ten city blocks and comprising 50 acres of floor space. The H.J. Heinz Company originated up the Allegheny River in the town of Sharpsburg, but soon outgrew that space in 1890. Construction of buildings in the new plant complex (pictured here) began and were completed in 1898. The new plant became known as “The House of the 57 Varieties.”
