Description
Floodwaters of the Allegheny River cover River Avenue and the main railroad line beside the H.J. Heinz Company main plant on the North Side section of Pittsburgh. This 1964 flood was not a major flood compared to the devastating 1936 flood, which inundated much of downtown Pittsburgh and nearly all riverfront industries. In 1965 the Kinzua Dam and associated reservoirs on the upper Allegheny River were completed. After its completion, the dam played a major role in suppressing floods.
