Description
In 1898, H.J. Heinz first leased and then bought (for $60,000) the Iron Pier in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and renamed it the Heinz Ocean Pier. Heinz had first visited Atlantic City in 1880 and noted how busy and exciting the resort was. Upon the pier he constructed an elegant environment in which to appreciate the company’s products. It has been described as Heinz’s “costliest, most ambitious, and probably most successful promotional undertaking.” Free to the public, it glowed at night with a 70-foot-high “57” sign on its roof. During the day, visitors could stroll on the boardwalk, lounge in the reading room or on the sun deck in rocking chairs, and visit several enclosed sections of the pier, including a glass pavilion with oriental rugs, ceramics, figurines, and a gigantic painting, “Custer’s Last Rally.” Fondly known as the “Crystal Palace by the Sea” and visited by an estimated 50 million people, it was seriously damaged by a 1944 hurricane and dismantled the following year.
