  • Widely admired for providing benefits for its employees, the H.J. Heinz Company was regarded as one of the best places in Pittsburgh to work. Among the many employee advantages was a well-equipped “hospital” area (pictured here) to care for employee injury and illness. Other Heinz initiatives included dining rooms for employees, a circulating library, country outings, river cruises, classes in homemaking, and a fitness center with a gymnasium and swimming pool.
