Description
Caption on the back of the photograph reads, “Ribbing - Assembling and fabricating airplane ribs and bulkheads by hot-press methods in H.J. Heinz Company plant.” Workers at the H.J. Heinz Company Main Plant in Pittsburgh’s North Side neighborhood work on a special project designed to produce wing assemblies for gliders during World War II. The glider wings, produced in a secret production effort, were used on gliders, which were instrumental in the invasion of Sicily in 1943, and on D-Day in Normandy, June 6, 1944. Constructed of plywood frames and exteriors, the wings were painted aluminum when finished to resemble metal.
