Description
Caption on the back of the photograph reads, “AT THE COAL MINES—Steel barges loading at a tipple of the Vesta Coal Company, subsidiary of the Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation, whose several mines are situated along the Monongahela river about fifty miles above Pittsburgh. Under normal operating conditions at the steel works and coke ovens, approximately 20,000 tons of coal are consumed each working day which requires a fleet of a dozen towboats and several hundred 1,000-ton steel barges for transport service between mines and mills. These fleets operate day and night, winter and summer, in all conditions of weather.”
