Description
Caption on the back of the photograph reads, “Vesta #5 Mine Tipple under construction, approximately 1907. Mine was opened for operation in 1908." The Vesta Coal Company, a subsidiary of the Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation, opened its Vesta No. 5 mine at Vestaburg, Pennsylvania. All coal mined from the Vesta No. 5 and No. 4 mines was transported across the Monongahela River and processed at LaBelle, which became the largest coal preparation plant in the world. The Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation built a “Skeetow," which was unique at the time, to assist the miners in getting from the mine opening up the steep hill to Vestaburg. The device was an escalator-style, endless cable moving slowly above a weather-protected macadam path. Assisted by looped ropes hanging from the cable overhead, the miners easily walked up a hillside to their parked cars or residences when they exited the mine. In 1918 due to World War I, Vesta No. 5 Mine was the second largest bituminous coal producing mine in the world, behind Vesta No. 4 Mine. In 1982 the E.T Massey Coal Company of Beckley, West Virginia, operated the Vesta No. 5 Mine and in the mid-1980s the mine ceased operations.
