Description
Steel worker cutting steel beams at a Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation mill. In July 1859 Laughlin & Company, later to become Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation, acquired land on the north side of the Monongahela River opposite Brownstown (currently the South Side neighborhood of Pittsburgh). The Eliza Works, employing over 5,000 people at one time, closed in 1977 and the enormous blast furnaces at the site were razed in the mid-1980s.
