Description
Benjamin Franklin Jones, one of the founders of Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation, was born August 8, 1824. His first job was as a clerk for the entrepreneur, Samuel M. Kier. By 1853 he had joined Kier and two German ironmasters, Bernard and John Lauth, in a partnership to finance and operate the American Iron Works. James Laughlin replaced the Lauth Brothers in the partnership and the firm of Jones & Laughlins was born. The business prospered during the American Civil War, when the company supplied iron products for the Union Army, and following the war when steel rails were in demand during the railroad boom. B. F. Jones served as an officer and director of the company until the early 1900s. In the photograph he is shown sitting on the right at his desk (right) in the old Pittsburgh warehouse office building.
