Caption on the back of the photograph reads, “Born 1813, died 1874. Was owner of railroad link in Pennsylvania Canal system. Hired B. F. Jones, Sr. and made him manager. Also was in iron business with B. F. Jones a short time at Armaugh, Pennsylvania, before Jones, Lauth & Co. was founded.” Samuel Kier, America’s first oil refiner, industrialist and transporter, was also involved in the pottery, coal mining, and steel businesses.
