Description
Description of the photograph reads, “The official party watches as a heat of steel is poured from the Bessemer.” The Bessemer process, which involves the removal of impurities in the iron, is carried on in a container called the Bessemer converter. This egg-shaped steel container lined with silica and clay or of dolomite, has a capacity from eight to thirty tons of molten iron. The container is set on pivots, which allow it to be tilted at an angle to receive charges, and turned upright during the “blow,” and inclined for pouring molten steel after completion of the process. As the air passes upward through the molten pig iron, impurities such as silicon, manganese, and carbon unite with the oxygen in the air to form oxides; the carbon monoxide burns off with a blue flame and the other impurities form slag. The molten iron from the converter is then emptied into ladles, which then are poured into molds. This whole process takes about 15 to 20 minutes.
