Description
The Brilliant Station, a primary pumping station and located on the southern bank of the Allegheny River, opposite Aspinwall, was built in 1879. In 1871 the Water Committee recommended the construction of a pumping station above Negley’s Run, the construction of a low reservoir on Brilliant Hill (Carnegie Lake), and a high-service reservoir at the head of Highland Avenue. Brilliant Hill Reservoir, although practically completed, was never used as a portion of the water-works system. In the 1870s, philanthropist Andrew Carnegie partially financed the creation of Lake Carnegie to be used as a halfway station for water being pumped out of the Allegheny River. The technology for holding water changed over the years and Lake Carnegie became a recreational lake instead. In 1932 the lake was cut in half to make room for the park's swimming pools, but it is still used for fishing during the summer.
