Description
In the center of the photograph is the University of Pittsburgh’s most prominent structure, the 42-story Cathedral of Learning. It is the tallest gothic styled building and second-tallest education building in the world. The University of Pittsburgh began as the Pittsburgh Academy in 1787. Chartered as the Western University of Pennsylvania in 1819, it became the University of Pittsburgh in 1908, when the university moved its campus to Oakland. In 2004 it had a total student population of 32,000 on its 132 acre main campus and four regional campuses. In the center of the photograph is Forbes Field, home to the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1909 to 1970. The field, named for General John Forbes, a British general during the French and Indian War, was originally built on the site of a 1908 football game between Carnegie Tech and the University of Pennsylvania. It was demolished July 28, 1971, and part of the campus of the University of Pittsburgh now stands in its place.
