Description
Bloomfield, encompassing approximately 381 acres and located about 3 miles east of downtown Pittsburgh, most likely derived its name from the numerous wild flowers that bloomed in the fields there long ago. In 1850 Bloomfield had only 13 houses and starting in 1870, Joseph Conrad Winebiddle, a German immigrant and prominent landowner, developed this farmland into residential lots. German mill workers in nearby Lawrenceville purchased Winebiddle’s lots and built row houses and businesses that closely resembled structures in their native countries. Bloomfield, never considered a borough or municipality, was annexed by the City of Pittsburgh in 1868 as part of Peebles Township.
