Description
A baseball game in progress at Forbes Field in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Forbes Field, home to the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1909 to 1970, had a capacity of 25,000 in 1909 and 35,000 in 1938. The field, built in 1909 at a cost of $1 million, was the first ballpark in the United States constructed entirely of poured concrete and steel. The first night game was played here on June 4, 1940. It was demolished July 28, 1971, and part of the campus of the University of Pittsburgh now stands in its place. The Litchfield Towers are visible in the center background.
