Description
Downtown Pittsburgh from the south end of the Smithfield Bridge showing the extent of air pollution during a typical day after smoke control was implemented. (Note: Refer to Collection No. MSP285.B021.F17.I01 for a view of the same area before smoke control was implemented). A remarkable improvement of air quality in Pittsburgh was the result of the Smoke Control Advisory Committee’s programs to reduce smog in the Pittsburgh and Allegheny County. The Smoke Control Committee investigated and studied the potential problems of smoke pollution and periodically reported to the Board of County Commissioners with regulation and abatement recommendations.
