Description
Caption on the back of the photograph reads, “Working by ‘remote control,’ Westinghouse scientist, Dr. Alex Goldman, weighs a sample of highly purified manganese-bismuth -- a magnetic material which promises to yield powerful new permanent magnets. Because it catches fire spontaneously on exposure to air, the new powdery material must be prepared and processed in this ‘gas chamber,’ which contains an inert atmosphere of helium gas. When sealed into a plastic binder, the manganese-bismuth powder forms permanent magnets which are easily shaped into a variety of forms.”
