Description
Mellon Institute of Industrial Research at the University of Pittsburgh was founded by Andrew W. and Richard B. Mellon as a memorial to their father, Judge Thomas Mellon, and Robert Kennedy Duncan who developed the idea of an industrial fellowship to solve manufacturing problems and train young people for technical careers. The Institute remained part of the University until 1927, when it was incorporated. In 1937 it moved to the building shown in the photograph at the corner of Fifth and Bellefield Avenues in Pittsburgh's Oakland neighborhood. Ringing the Greek style building are 62 Ionic columns each a single 60-ton piece of limestone ground from a 125-ton block. At the time the building was erected, they were the largest of their kind in the world. The eight-story structure housed more than 200 laboratories. In 1967 Mellon Institute merged with the Carnegie Institute of Technology to form Carnegie Mellon University.
