Description
A tap dancing group performs during an Easter Seals benefit at the Warrington Recreation center at 329 East Warrington Avenue in the Allentown section of Pittsburgh. Allentown was named after a butcher named Joseph Allen. In the 1860s the firm of McLain and Maple purchased the Allen and Beltzhoover farms and laid out plots and streets. German immigrant mill workers moved to this area from the polluted and congested Birmingham, present day South Side. Allentown was annexed by the City of Pittsburgh on April 2, 1872. In 1919 Edgar Allen founded the National Society for Crippled Children and in the spring of 1934, the organization launched its first Easter "seals" campaign to raise money for its services. To show their support, donors placed the seals on envelopes and letters. In 1952 the lily was officially incorporated as the Easter Seals’ logo and by 1967 the Easter "seal" was so well recognized, the organization formally adopted the name "Easter Seals." Today, Easter Seals assists more than one million children and adults with disabilities and their families annually through a nationwide network of more than 450 service sites.
