Description
South Park covers approximately 2,000-acres and is known for its long association as the site of the Allegheny County Fair. This park, and its counterpart in the North Hills, North Park, were established in the 1920s by the former Pittsburgh mayor, Edward V. Babcock, who bought much of the land with his personal funds. Some of the park’s attractions included an 18 and a 9-hole golf course, a wildlife reserve, a skating rink, a “wave action” pool, and numerous trails. It also is the site of the Oliver Miller Homestead, and eighteenth century residence that played a part in the Whiskey Rebellion. South Park is in the most heavily populated portion of Allegheny County outside of Pittsburgh, and is used by all levels of the community.
