  • In addition to permanent displays for palms, orchids, cacti, and ferns, the Phipps Conservatory sponsors major seasonal shows such as the Fall, Christmas, and Spring Flower Shows. The Conservatory, built in 1893 by Lord and Burnham (specialists in greenhouse design and construction) of Irvington, New York, erected the first nine display houses. Phipps Conservatory, located in the Schenley Park neighborhood of Pittsburgh, was a gift to the City of Pittsburgh from industrialist/philanthropist, Henry Phipps. Opened on December 7, 1893, it was the largest conservatory in the United States. Today, it is among the oldest and largest Victorian glasshouses in the nation.
