Description
The Highland Park Zoological Gardens, now the Pittsburgh Public Zoo and Aquarium, opened on June 14,1898, due in large part to a generous donation of $125,000 by philanthropist Christopher Lyman Magee for the construction of zoological gardens in Pittsburgh’s Highland Park neighborhood. In 1949 Pittsburgh’s first Children’s Zoo opened following the receipt of a grant from the Sarah Mellon Scaife Foundation. In 1994 the Zoo made another major transition from a city operated organization to a private non-profit operated organization. The Children’s Zoo reopened as Kid’s Kingdom on May 27, 1995. Kid’s Kingdom, an interactive facility with playground equipment and hands-on human to animal encounters, is regarded as one the top three children’s zoos in the United States. The Zoological Society of Pittsburgh currently owns and operates the Pittsburgh Public Zoo.
