Description
A display highlights the Allegheny Conference on Community Development’s plans for the redevelopment of Pittsburgh’s downtown area during the late 1940s. This exhibit took place as part of a Better Homes Exhibit, which ran from September 17-25, 1949. Pittsburgh Renaissance I changed the Point from railway yards, industry and small businesses, to leisure parks, and modern office buildings. Construction began on the Gateway Center buildings in 1950 and was completed in 1952. Four Gateway Center was added in 1960. Prior to Renaissance I, the Point was in a state of complete disrepair. Litter, debris, unused freight yards, and vacant buildings polluted the “heart” of Pittsburgh. In Pittsburgh Renaissance I was a cultural revolution begun by prominent industrialists, most notably, Richard Mellon. The Point became the focus of this urban planning project.
