The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh-Allegheny Regional was originally known as the Carnegie Free Library. It was named after its benefactor, Andrew Carnegie, who donated over $250,000 for its construction in 1886, and another $150,000 for an expansion in 1915. The architects who designed the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., Smithmeyer and Pel, also designed the Carnegie Free Library.
