Description
The special truck-mounted "jumbo” drilling rig used to bore two tubes of the Fort Pitt Tunnel was designed and constructed by Merritt-Chapman & Scott Corporation. Jumbo’s 12 steel drills could bore holes up to ten feet deep at the same time. Seen here, the drill is just beginning to bore into the sheer face of stone at the base of Mount Washington on the south end of the tunnels.
