Description
The Fort Pitt Bridge concrete piers (lower center) under construction within the cofferdam site. This site was a temporary watertight enclosure that was pumped dry to expose the bottom of the Monongahela River so that these piers could be built. The construction project included a new highway that bisected Point State Park that required new traffic interchanges and the removal of the Point Bridge (background). The decision to build the Fort Pitt Bridge about 900 feet upstream from the old Point Bridge was based on the aesthetics of the Point. The Fort Pitt Bridge opened on June 19, 1959.
