Description
The Veteran’s General Medical Hospital, today known as the Veterans Affairs Pittsburgh Healthcare System, is located in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh. The University Drive facility, originally built in the mid-1950s, is a 250-bed medical/surgical tertiary-care facility for United States military veterans, as well as a national center for liver and renal transplants, cardiac surgery, oncology, radiation therapy, and geriatric care. Also affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh, the facility trains over 500 medical and dental students, residents, and interns. The large structure directly above the hospital in the photograph is Schenley High School, built in 1916 and located on Bigelow and Centre Avenues. In the far right center is the Falk Laboratory School and in the lower left corner of the photograph is Pitt Stadium, both of which are located on the University of Pittsburgh campus.
