Description
The Three Rivers Arts Festival was the first conceived as a project by the Women’s Committee of the Museum of Art in the late 1950s. Paintings, drawings, and prints were displayed in the Festival booths throughout the Gateway Center plazas. Crafts were found in the lobby of Gateway Four, and sculpture in the outdoor court near Gateway Three. There were demonstrations of arts and crafts techniques in the various exhibit areas. Performing arts programs included presentations by the Pittsburgh Symphony and the Pittsburgh Playhouse to name a few. The Festival was financed by contributions from the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Council of Arts, local foundations, Pittsburgh business and industry, and interested individuals. There was no admission fee, and proceeds were derived only from sale of catalogues, commissions on art sales, and artists’ entry and rental fees. A great deal of the festivals success rested with its volunteer workers. In 1970 their number more than doubled from 900 to 2,000 since the festival first started in 1960. Since 1961, it has had jurors of national prominence and they have also acted as consultants in forming and guiding similar arts fairs in several states.
