Description
Caption on the back of the photograph reads, “Richard Karp conducting “The Barber of Seville” with Graciela Rivera, Nino Martini, Robert Merrill (in his debut as “Figaro”) and Salvatore Baccaloni.” Richard Karp was the Pittsburgh Opera’s first general director. Dr. Karp, a talented Viennese musician, came to Pittsburgh in 1942 to escape the war in Europe. Under his direction the Pittsburgh Opera moved to the Syria Mosque in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, and in 1971 the company moved to Heinz Hall. Dr. Karp’s 35-year leadership ended in 1977, when he died of cancer.
