Description
A view of the area now known as Gateway Center in downtown Pittsburgh. In the foreground the remains of the Wabash Terminal during demolition. Once one of the grandest railroad terminals in the United States, the building, the largest example of Beaux-Arts architecture in the city, was destroyed by fire in 1946. Shortly thereafter, demolition began on the entire area being used as parking lot in this photograph. In the right background is the old Pittsburgh Press building, now home office of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the only building left standing other that the Fort Pitt Block House. To the left of the demolition site is what was then known as Ferry Street.
