Description
The Gimbel’s Department Store Building dominates the foreground (left, partially in shadow). Gimbel’s was one of five major department stores in downtown Pittsburgh for more than forty years. To the right of Gimbel’s is the Oliver Building, and in the background, dominating the skyline are the Gulf Building (left) and the Koppers Building (right). In the left background is the Penn or 17th Street Incline running from Liberty Avenue at the bottom in the Strip District to Ledlie Street in the Hill District at the top. The incline was constructed in 1883 to haul 20-ton coal cars and was one of the most massive inclines ever constructed.
