Description
The Mesta Machine Company plant, located about six miles from Pittsburgh, covered more than twenty acres and employed approximately three thousand employees, most of whom were skilled mechanics, in the early twentieth century. During this time, Mesta was one of the leading producers of large machinery in the United States. The company produced various types of engines including gas and steam powered engines for use with blast furnaces, una-flow or direct-flow engines for driving roll mills, and reversing and Corliss engines. These products, noted for their efficiency, were utilized in rolling mills, air and gas compressors, and vacuum pumps. Mesta also produced lofty forging presses that ranged in size from 200 tons to 15,000 tons. During World War I Mesta built these presses for use by the United States government and military. In 1919 the United States government placed an order for the largest forging press in American history. The 14,000-ton capacity press was ordered for installation in the U.S. Naval Ordnance Plant in Charleston, West Virginia.
