Description
Halls Grove Elementary School, formerly known as the 15th Ward No. 2 School and located at Hall and Lantry Streets, was named in honor of a prominent family who owned the local picnic grounds in Pittsburgh’s North Side neighborhood. The Hall’s eventually sold their property to Judge Thomas Mellon, who separated it into building lots. The school was constructed on the site of the Hall’s former picnic grounds in 1890. The original Halls Grove School was a simple frame building with four rooms. As the community grew, a need arose for a larger school and additional classrooms were built in 1912. In 1923 an entirely new building was constructed to meet the needs of the community. The original frame building was razed in 1941.
