Description
Fort Pitt Elementary School, located at 5101 Hillcrest Street, was designed in 1906 by architect C.M. Bartberger. The school, which is named in honor of William Pitt, sits on a tract of land that was purchased by a man named Conrad Winebiddle during the Revolutionary War era. This area later became known as the 19th Ward, now the Garfield section of Pittsburgh. Since the school was built near Fort Lafayette, Bartberger designed the building to resemble a fort. However, the design of the school is not it’s only historical feature. Stained glass windows in the rounded area of the grand staircase feature pictures of famous Americans Alexander Hamilton, Nathan Hale, and William Pitt. The school opened on September 12, 1906, with 241 students and six teachers.
