Description
Pittsburgh Central High School, the first high school in Pittsburgh, opened September 25, 1855, in rented rooms on Smithfield Street. In 1868 it moved to the Bank of Commerce Building at Wood and Sixth Streets in downtown Pittsburgh, where it stayed until a new building was completed in 1871. Central High School was the only Pittsburgh high school until April 1896 when Fifth Avenue High School was completed. The school closed in 1916 and was razed in 1947.
