Description
The auxiliary Quonset-hut Building at the Shakespeare School at Shakespeare Street and Shady Avenue housed automotive equipment for auto-diesel courses offered to veterans. The 1897 Shakespeare School, named for the earlier Shakespeare Hotel located on the same site, closed in 1956. The Pittsburgh Board of Public Education established a comprehensive education and training program for veterans in 1946, including both academic and vocational courses. By 1958, when much of the program had been discontinued, over 27,000 World War II and Korean ex-servicemen had taken courses offered by this program.
