Description
Taylor Allderdice High School, built in 1926, is located at the corner of Shady Avenue and Forward Street in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh. One of Pittsburgh’s largest urban high schools, the school had an enrollment of approximately 1,700 in 2003. The school was named for Taylor Allderdice, who began as a mill worker in Pittsburgh. He left the mill to attend college after which he joined National Tube Company, eventually becoming President of the firm from 1926 to 1928. When the Pittsburgh School Code of 1911 became official, he was appointed one of the charter members of the school board. He was chairman of the Building and Supply Committee for many years. Pictured is the Taylor Allderdice Junior High School basketball team with Coach A. Giovane standing on the left.
