Description
Liberty School is located at 621 Filbert Street in the 20th Ward or Shadyside neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh’s 20th Ward was created by the annexation of Liberty Township to the City of Pittsburgh in 1867. Nearby was a village of East Liberty that still exists as the East Liberty neighborhood of Pittsburgh. It is from Liberty Township that the school got its name. The first Liberty School was erected in 1872. In 1911 it was rebuilt and in 1928 it was remodeled, at which time it changed from an elementary to a junior high school. The 1872 building was torn down in 1935 to make room for an addition, which was completed in 1936. Liberty became an elementary school again in 1936. It has a magnet program which is available to all City of Pittsburgh and Mount Oliver residents.
